Privacy Policy
This policy explains what Departmentofinternetsecurity (“we,” “us”) collects when you visit departmentofinternetsecurity.net, why, and what choices you have. We’re a publication about online privacy, so we try to collect as little as we can.
What we collect
- Information you send us. If you use our contact form, we receive your name, email address, the subject you choose and your message. We use it to reply and, for tips, to research a story.
- Newsletter sign-ups. If you join our email list, the details you enter in the form are collected by our form provider on our behalf.
- Technical data. Like most websites, our server records standard log data such as IP address, browser type, pages requested and time of visit. We use it to keep the site running and secure.
Cookies and analytics
We may use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are read and how people arrive. Google Analytics sets cookies and processes data such as approximate location, device type and pages viewed. You can opt out with Google’s browser add-on or by blocking cookies in your browser.
Advertising
Ads on this site are served through Revive Adserver. The ad server may set cookies or use similar technology to count impressions, limit how often you see an ad and measure clicks. Legal pages on this site carry no ads.
Newsletter form provider
Our newsletter form is embedded from Sphere CRM (link.sphere-crm.com). Information you enter there is handled by that provider under its own privacy terms. You can unsubscribe from any email we send using the link at the bottom of the message.
Headlines and third-party links
Some pages show headlines from other publishers, fetched by our own server. Clicking one takes you to that publisher’s site, which has its own privacy policy. We aren’t responsible for how other sites handle your data.
How long we keep data
Contact messages are kept for as long as needed to respond and follow up, then deleted within 24 months unless they relate to a published story or a legal matter. Server logs are rotated regularly.
We don’t sell your data
We don’t sell or rent personal information. We share it only with service providers that help us run the site, such as hosting, analytics, advertising and email, or when the law requires it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or get a copy of your personal information, and to object to or limit certain processing.
- California (CCPA/CPRA): you can ask what we’ve collected, ask us to delete it, and opt out of any sale or sharing for targeted advertising. We won’t treat you differently for using these rights.
- UK and EU (GDPR): we rely on legitimate interests to run and secure the site, consent for non-essential cookies where required, and your request when you contact us. You can complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
This site is written for a general audience and isn’t directed at children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect their information.
